I have brown micro-suede couches and recliner, a brown/red/cream/yellow area rug and a distressed bronze mirror in my living room with red curtains. I found a really cute (and cheap) floor lamp but it only comes in black. Would lamps with a black base look bad in a room with so much brown? I was thinking of changing the shades on them to a red or cream color instead of white and getting yellow throw pillows to match the rug also…any opinions? I also don’t have a coffee table or end tables yet so I’m trying to decide if black lamps would clash once I get my tables (I plan on brown wood for the tables).
I used all Benjamin Moore paints from their traditional collection for my apartment. All the ceilings and trim are Windham cream and the hallway is bryant gold and it leads into the living room which I had painted providence olive. There are two problems with the providence olive: one, it’s a little too dark. I would prefer something much lighter to give the room a little more brightness, especially since I have a big window in there. I’d like it to be a sunnier room, so to speak. The second issue is that the couch I purchased for the apartment is a Pottery Barn Buchanan couch in pewter which almost disappears into the providence olive. The colors are too close. So here is my challenge – I’d like to stick with Benjamin Moore paints. The carpet in the living room is a Tibetan rug in flax from Restoration Hardware – here is a link:

The couch, again, is a Buchanan couch in pewter (which is kind of a grayish green). They don’t list that fabric anymore at Pottery Barn. The arm chair is in an Espresso, same – it’s a Buchanan from Pottery Barn. The coffee table is stained in dark espresso, also from Pottery Barn. And I have a brown leather traditional armchair from Crate and Barrel. The flooring is a regular wood floor and the ceiling fan and both lamps in the room are a dark bronze finish. Should you need more detail, let me know. I’d just like a brighter color that can tie the whole room together with the rug and furniture and still be a good transition from the Bryant Gold in the hallway. John H. – you’re absolutely right! Sorry but I made a bit of a mistake regarding hallway color. I thought the bryant gold was too orange so I instead had it done in Wilmington Tan. I don’t know if it will make a difference but it’s pretty clear you know what you’re talking about so if this makes a difference, by all means let me know. My bedroom is great barrington green and my bathroom is sherwood green, all with the same trim. I’d like to avoid more green but am open to whatever you have in mind. Thanks again.
